What is the difference between SATA and NVMe SSDs?
The primary difference is how the SSD communicates with your computer. SATA SSDs use the SATA storage interface and typically provide speeds up to approximately 550 MB/s. NVMe SSDs use the PCI Express (PCIe) interface and can provide significantly higher performance depending on the PCIe generation supported by the system. Typical NVMe SSD performance:
- PCIe Gen3: Up to ~3,500 MB/s
- PCIe Gen4: Up to ~7,000 MB/s
- PCIe Gen5: Up to ~14,000 MB/s
For everyday computing, both SATA and NVMe SSDs offer substantial responsiveness improvements compared to traditional hard drives. NVMe SSDs are particularly beneficial for content creation, large file transfers, gaming, and other storage-intensive workloads.
Important
An M.2 SSD is not automatically an NVMe SSD. Some M.2 drives use the SATA interface, while others use NVMe. Always verify both the SSD type and the capabilities of the computer's M.2 slot before purchasing.
